Xiamen Botanical Garden
Xiamen Botanical Garden, first built in 1960, is set amidst Wanshi Mountain in the southeast part of Xiamen Island. It covers an area of 4.93 square kilometers and serves as a comprehensive botanical garden integrating plant species preservation, scientific research, science popularization education, development and application, ecological protection and tourism services. In the garden, more than 8,600 taxa of plants have been introduced and cultivated from all over the world , and more than a dozen specialized gardens have been built, including Palm Garden, Rainforest, Gymnosperm Garden, Peculiar plant Garden, Ginger Garden and Succulent Garden with the largest outdoor succulent exhibition area in China. The Botanical Garden is a national science popularization education base, a biodiversity conservation demonstration base and the national wildlife conservation and nature reserve construction project -Palm Plant Conservation Center.
Including botanical landscape, natural wonders and human attractions, Xiamen Botanical Garden is the core component of Gulang Island Wanshi Mountain National Key Scenic Area and the first batch of AAAA tourist scenic spots in China, which is a charming and pleasant scenery. In the garden, the mountain ranges rise and fall, with wide varieties of unusual and interesting rocks and stone. Many famous sights of Xiamen are gathered here, such as “ Wan shi han cui”, “Tai ping shi xiao”, “Tian jie xiao zhong” and “Wan wu chao tian”. Several famous temples in southern Fujian, such as Tianjie Temple, Wanshilian Temple and Taipingyan Temple, also settled here.
Deng Xiaoping, Hu Jintao, Xijinping and other domestic and foreign politicians and leaders have visited here or planted trees. In 1984, Chairman Deng Xiaoping planted a big Cinnamomum glanduliferum on the Araucaria lawn, which has become a place where people cherish the memory of the great man.
